讲述了NewYorkprivatedetectiveDuncanMacMacLainisblindbuthaskeenlydevelopedallhisothersenses.HepursueshisworkassistedbyhisfaithfulguidedogFriday,hisbutler,Alistair,andhisassistant,Marty.RetiredactressNormaLawry,anoldfriend,comestoMacseekingadvice.Herheadstrong17-year-oldstep-daughterBarbara,herselfapromisingactress,isenamoredwithherleadingmaninasmalltheaterproduction,themucholderLotharioPaulGerente.Paul,whohadoncebeenNormaslover,hasconvincedBarbarathatNormaactuallywantsPaulforherselfandhasonlymarriedherfatherStephenforhismoney.AtMacsurging,NormatriedtoreasonwithPaul,butheinsiststhathelovesBarbaraandlaughsheroff.BarbaraisequallydisdainfulofherandagreestomeetPaulfordinnerthatnightathisapartment.NormashusbandStephenLawryisascientistleavingthatnightonatriptotestasecretinventiononwhichhehasbeenworkingforthegovernmentandthewareffort.WorriedaboutBarbara,sheusesapretextnottoaccompanyStephenandgoestotheapartment.WhenBarbaraarrives,shefindsPaulsdeadbodyandthinksthatNormahaskilledhim,eventhoughNormainsiststhathewasdeadwhenshearrived.BarbarathreatenstocallthepoliceunlesssheleavesStephen.Fearingthatascandalwillhurthim,Normaagrees.NormathenturnstoMac,whogoestoPaulsapartmentwithFridayandMarty,onlytofindthebodyandtherugunderitmissing.AmanarrivestoreplacetherugandMachidesinacloset,overhearingatelephonecalltoNormasnumberfromGabrieltoVera.Macaccidentallygiveshimselfaway,butwithFridayshelpoverpowersGabriel,whorefusestotalk.MachasMartyhidehimtokeephimunderwraps.Normareturnstohercountryhomeunexpectedly,whichdiscouragesanespionageringthatincludesherbutler,Hansen,frombreakingintoStephenssafeandstealinghisplans.TheyhavekilledGerente,whowasalsoanagent,andhiddenthebody.MacarriveswithFridayatNormashouseandpretendstobehercurmudgeonlyUncleMacwhohascomeforavisit.HisblindnesslullsanysuspicionsHansenmighthaveabouthim.Shortlythereafter,Barbaracomeshomefromanemergencyrehearsal,calledtogetheroutofthehousebyherdirector,CheliScott,whoinveiglesaninvitationtospendthenightattheLawryhome.UnknowntoBarbaraandNorma,Cheliistheringleaderofthespies.CheliorderedPaulkilledbecausehisaffectionforBarbarawasbeginningtolimithiseffectiveness,andsheimmediatelysuspectsMacisnotwhatheseems.GabrielswifeVera,theLawrysmaid,isalsoapartoftheplot.WhenGabrieldoesnotreturnhome,Verabecomeshystericalwithworry.MacsecretlyasksVeratomeethiminthegreenhouse,usingherworryaboutGabrielasalure.Sheisobservedbytheothers,however,andiskilledbyHansenbeforeshecanreachMac.ThespiescutthehousestelephonewiressothatMacandNormacannotcallthepolice,andChelihasMaclockedupunderguard.Usinghisblindnessasadistraction,MacoverpowershisguardandreleasesFridayoutawindowwithinstructionstogohomeandgetMarty.StephenarriveshomeandChelithreatenshisfamilyifhedoesnotgiveherthefinalstepincreatinghisinvention,whichwasnotinthesafe.BarbarafinallyrealizeshowmuchNormaactuallycaresforher.Mactriestostallfortime,butislockedinthecellar.WhenHansengoestokillhim,Machasbrokenthelightbulbandhisadvantageoftotaldarknesshelpshimovercomethespy.MartyandFridayreturnwiththepolice.WhenFridayisspottedbyalookout,MacoverpowershimandissavedfrombeingshotbyanotherlookoutbyFriday.Afterthespiesarecaptured,StephenandNormaareofftoWashington,D.C.,withBarbararemainingbehindtocareforhernewUncleMac.
