HauntedbythememoryofWalterHolderlin,asoldierhekilledduringWorldWarI,FrenchmusicianPaulRenard(PhillipsHolmes)confessestoapriest(FrankSheridan),whograntshimabsolution.Usingtheaddressonaletterhefoundonthedeadmansbody,PaulthentravelstoGermanytofindhisfamily.Asanti-FrenchsentimentcontinuestopermeateGermany,Dr.Holderlin(LionelBarrymore)initiallyrefusestowelcomePaulintohishome,butchangeshismindwhenhissonsfiancéeElsaidentifieshimasthemanwhohasbeenleavingflowersonWaltersgrave.Ratherthanrevealtherealconnectionbetweenthem,PaultellstheHolderlinfamilyhewasafriendoftheirson,whoattendedthesamemusicalconservatoryhedid.Althoughthehostiletownspeopleandlocalgossipsdisapprove,theHolderlinsbefriendPaul,whofindshimselffallinginlovewithElsa(NancyCarroll).WhensheshowsPaulherformerfiancésbedroom,hebecomesdistraughtandtellsherthetruth.SheconvinceshimnottoconfesstoWaltersparents,whohaveembracedhimastheirsecondson,andPaulagreestoforegoeasinghisconscienceandstayswithhisadoptedfamily.Dr.HolderlinpresentsWaltersviolintoPaul,whoplaysitwhileElsaaccompanieshimonthepiano.Thefilmsoriginaltitle,TheManIKilled,waschangedtoTheFifthCommandmenttoavoidgivingwrongimpressionsinthemindsofthepublicaboutthecharacterofthestory.ItultimatelywasreleasedasBrokenLullaby.
