讲述了1934,America.TheDustbowl.AfugitivenamedBenHawkinsfindsrefugewithinatravelingcarnivalcomprisedofatarotcardreaderandhercatatonic/telekineticmother,ablindmentalist,abeardedlady,andconjoinedtwins,amongstothers.ThecarnivalisownedbythemysteriousandunseenManagement,whohasdesignsontheyoungHawkins,fortheboyisconcealinganuntappedgift:hecanhealthelameandraisethedead--ataprice.Benalsofindshimselfdisturbedbycrypticandpropheticdreams,whichheshareswithaMethodistpreacherinCalifornia,BrotherJustinCrowe.BrotherJustin,convincedbyhisdreamsheisfollowingGodswill,hasbeguntopracticehisownextraordinarytalents,althoughthepreachersplansincreasinglyleadtodisturbingandtragicconsequences.Inthislastgreatageofmagic,BenHawkinsandJustinCrowearemovingtowardagreatconflictbetweenGoodandEvil,althoughitnotyetclearonwhichsidesthesemenwillstand.
